Role Description.

Head of AI owns the end-to-end AI strategy, research direction, and production delivery across the BYLD Platform. This role is for a senior technical leader with a strong research record and deep engineering discipline capable of turning state-of-the-art methods into reliable systems that ship, scale, and measurably improve cost, speed, and quality. The role spans: applied research, model development, data architecture, MLOps, and cross-functional execution with Software Engineering, Product, and industrial R&D. This is a hands-on leadership role with direct accountability for outcomes.

Key Responsibilities.

  • Define the AI strategy and success metrics tied to business and industrial KPIs.
  • Lead applied research and select methods appropriate for production constraints (accuracy, robustness, latency, explainability, cost).
  • Architect the data foundation: pipelines, governance, labeling strategy, lineage, and feedback loops.
  • Design and deliver production ML systems: training, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, drift detection, and rollback.
  • Establish MLOps standards and model lifecycle governance (versioning, reproducibility, audits, compliance).
  • Own model evaluation methodology: offline metrics, online experiments, and real-world validation in manufacturing context.
  • Build and lead a high-caliber AI team (research, ML engineering, data engineering); set hiring bar and technical culture.
  • Partner with Software Architecture/Engineering to integrate models into platform services and workflows.
  • Translate R&D prototypes into stable, maintainable products with measurable ROI.
  • Ensure security, privacy, and IP protection across data and model assets.

 

Core Mission

  • Build and lead an AI function that accelerates BYLD’s platform capabilities across:
  • Automated concept pricing and early-stage estimates from sparse parametric inputs.
  • Material grouping and cutting optimization to minimize scrap and operational waste.
  • Document-to-structure pipelines (PDF → structured data → CAD/3D/production artifacts).
  • Structural component pre-sizing (e.g., trusses) and engineering-assist tooling.
  • Demand forecasting, lead-time prediction, supplier optimization, and risk detection.
  • Quality control analytics across manufacturing and assembly workflows.

Desired Skills and Qualifications.

  • PhD in Machine Learning / AI / Computer Science / Applied Mathematics / related field.
  • Documented achievements: high-impact publications, patents, significant open-source contributions, or production systems recognized at industry level.
  • 8+ years in advanced ML/AI roles, including leading teams and shipping production ML systems.
  • Deep expertise in at least three of the following:
    • LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tool-use agents, evaluation harnesses
    • Computer vision + document understanding (OCR alternatives, layout, table extraction, diagram parsing)
    • Optimization (combinatorial / linear / mixed-integer) and hybrid ML + OR systems
    • Time-series forecasting, probabilistic modeling, causal inference
    • Geometric deep learning, 3D reasoning, CAD/CAE adjacent workflows
    • Reinforcement learning / planning (when justified by constraints and observability)
  • Strong engineering capability: Python + modern ML stack, distributed training/inference, model compression and serving. Data engineering fundamentals and production-grade software practices
  • Proven ability to operate under real industrial constraints: noisy data, shifting distributions, hard deadlines, safety margins, and cost accountability.
  • Clear technical judgment: rejects “demo-ware,” prioritizes measurable impact.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in AEC/construction, manufacturing, supply chain, or industrial automation.
  • Track record building AI teams from zero to high performance.
  • Experience designing evaluation frameworks for LLM/agent systems and document intelligence pipelines.
  • Experience integrating ML into .NET-centric product ecosystems via services/APIs.
